As the Medical Director for Paramount Ambulance and several Iowa and Wisconsin EMS systems, I have discovered some key ingredients for success: quality people with quality equipment are an obvious necessity.

However, the greatest effect on patient outcome is continuity of patient care of the entire system. From the original EMS call for help and transport to definitive care at Mercy Medical Center or elsewhere, and when needed on occasion, ambulance or critical care transport to higher level care hospitals. Having the same Medical Director for these systems inherently increases your consistency. Consistency born of continuity is Paramount.
